Ever wondered why your email campaigns have a high bounce rate and how you could fix them? Before we get into how to fix it, let’s first find out what are the types of email bounces and why they happen.

This is why we love using tools like** HubSpot,** as they can give you complete insights into why your emails have bounced.

1. What we do is we go to our HubSpot account and navigate to Marketing > Email.
2. Click the name of your email that included any contacts who bounced.
3. Click the Recipients tab.
4. In the left sidebar menu, click Bounced.
5. ** ****Voila!
   **

So what are the types of bounces?

**[Hard bounce](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/email/what-is-the-difference-between-a-hard-bounce-and-a-soft-bounce?_ga=2.127830989.1902655052.1673899531-2053802173.1645678000#hard-bounce):** usually indicates a permanent error but can also be caused by a strict email security filter. To protect your email sender's reputation, HubSpot [excludes these contacts](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/articles/kcs_article/email/analyze-your-marketing-email-campaign-performance#not-sent) from future emails.

**[Soft bounce](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/email/what-is-the-difference-between-a-hard-bounce-and-a-soft-bounce?_ga=2.127830989.1902655052.1673899531-2053802173.1645678000#soft-bounce):** indicates a temporary problem with the recipients' server, or another temporary technical problem. Contacts who soft bounce are eligible to receive future emails from you.

**Pending bounce:** caused by a temporary technical issue with either the sending or receiving email server. HubSpot continues to try sending the email for up to 72 hours. If the message isn't delivered during that time, it becomes a [soft bounce](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/email/what-is-the-difference-between-a-hard-bounce-and-a-soft-bounce?_ga=2.127830989.1902655052.1673899531-2053802173.1645678000#soft-bounce).

**Global bounce:** a hard bounce for a permanent reason across three or more HubSpot accounts. Permanent bounces include [unknown user](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/email/what-is-the-difference-between-a-hard-bounce-and-a-soft-bounce?_ga=2.127830989.1902655052.1673899531-2053802173.1645678000#hard-bounce-errors-and-recommendations) and [mailbox full](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/email/what-is-the-difference-between-a-hard-bounce-and-a-soft-bounce?_ga=2.127830989.1902655052.1673899531-2053802173.1645678000#hard-bounce-errors-and-recommendations). Global bounces are [dropped](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/articles/kcs_article/email/analyze-your-marketing-email-campaign-performance#not-sent) from future emails across all HubSpot accounts.

So what are some of the Hard Bounce recommendations?

**Unknown user:** this indicates a permanent error caused by an invalid email address. HubSpot automatically [drops](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/articles/kcs_article/email/analyze-your-marketing-email-campaign-performance#not-sent) contacts from future emails if they bounce for this reason. If a contact bounces for this reason across three HubSpot accounts, the email address is [globally bounced](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/email/what-is-the-difference-between-a-hard-bounce-and-a-soft-bounce?_ga=2.127830989.1902655052.1673899531-2053802173.1645678000#types-of-bounces).

**Mailbox full: **this indicates a permanent error caused by an abandoned email inbox.

**Content:** something in the email body or subject triggered spam filters. To solve the problem, ask the contact to [add your sending IP addresses to their allowlist](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/email/contacts-not-receiving-your-marketing-emails#add-marketing-email-sending-ip-addresses-to-an-allowlist), then [unbounce the contact](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/articles/kcs_article/email/how-can-i-send-an-email-to-a-contact-that-has-previously-bounced) in HubSpot. **Spam:** something in the body, subject, or From address of the email that is classified as spam by the recipient's email server.

**Policy: **the email did not pass one of the security policies of the recipient's server, but it is not explicit about which one. This includes DMARC; DKIM, and SPF authentication failures.

**Other:** the response from the recipient's email server wasn't specific enough to categorize the bounce.
